The best books on technical analysis and trading (2026)

15 October 2026 · Chart Edge

These books are for people learning to read charts and trade, from complete beginners to those who want to tighten up their risk management. Trading carries a real risk of loss, and no book removes it, so read these as education rather than advice. Disclosure: we publish one of the books below (marked).

We have kept each description to what the publisher or book listing says. Several of these titles appear on most of the technical analysis reading lists we checked, which is a fair sign of how widely they are used. None of them, ours included, can tell you what the market will do next. Whatever you read, practise on paper or with very small positions first, and never risk money you cannot afford to lose. If you only have time for one or two, the short guide at the end matches each book to a common situation.

Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets by John J. Murphy

Subtitled A Comprehensive Guide to Trading Methods and Applications, Murphy's book extends his earlier futures-focused guide to all financial markets. It covers chart reading, indicators, candlestick charting, intermarket relationships and stock rotation. It suits anyone who wants a thorough reference on technical analysis to return to over time.

Japanese Candlestick Charting Techniques by Steve Nison

Subtitled A Contemporary Guide to the Ancient Investment Techniques of the Far East, this book explains the background of candlestick charts and how to use them in practice. It suits traders who already look at candlestick charts every day and want to understand the patterns properly rather than memorising a few names. It pairs naturally with Murphy's broader reference.

Chart Edge by Manthan Bhendkar (our book)

Our book covers reading charts, five fully defined trading strategies, position sizing and risk management, backtesting, and a 90-day plan. It suits newer traders who want specific, testable rules and a structured way to practise them. Trading carries risk, and the book treats risk management as a core skill rather than an afterthought. Trading in the Zone by Mark Douglas

Subtitled Master the Market with Confidence, Discipline, and a Winning Attitude, this is a guide to trading psychology. It explains why traders keep making the same costly mistakes, questions common market myths and teaches a probability-based way of thinking about risk. It suits traders who know their method but struggle to follow it.

Trade Your Way to Financial Freedom by Van K. Tharp

Van K. Tharp shows how a trader's own strengths, style and personality can be combined with a structured process to build or rebuild a trading approach. It suits traders who want to design a system that fits them, rather than copying someone else's rules.

Market Wizards by Jack D. Schwager

Subtitled Interviews with Top Traders, this is the first book in Schwager's long-running Market Wizards series. It is built around conversations with successful traders and the question of what separates them from the majority. It suits readers who want to hear how experienced traders think, in their own words. Later books in the series cover stock traders and hedge fund managers if you want more.
